    In judicial proceedings, the right to legal advice and representation is important to allow suspected or accused children to see their rights being fully respected. The youth lawyer has a great role to play with the child at all stages of a proceeding. However, if legal aid and representation are the rights of the child, it should be noted that their implementation is not systematic. Indeed, access to a lawyer and to adequate legal representation remains a challenge in many States of the European Union. Yet promoting child-friendly justice is the only way to guarantee the full satisfaction of their rights. DCI-Belgium coordinates the European project My Lawyer, My Rights which aims to strengthen children’s rights in criminal proceedings within the EU. More information here !

    Facts: This case deals with the international responsibility of Guatemala, that has committed five massacres against members of the Rio Negro community, in the context of an internal armed conflict that took place between 1962 and 1996. These murders were committed by the Guatemalan army between 1980 and 1982.
